To add to that, at the beginning of the season, I checked with Sister Corita of St. Augustine's in Tremont. They feed many folks at least two meals a day, 7 days per week. She said they would take any amount of anything.

Thanks Jody. This is quite helpful. I was able to contact a friend at the Cleveland Foodbank. The agency staff there suggested Iglesia Nueva Vida, near West 25th St. at 2327 Holmden 44109. I spoke with the pastor there yesterday and will deliver ...

Pro-Pesticide Group Criticizes First Lady’s Organic Garden

"And First Lady Michelle Obama is coming under criticism from a pro-pesticide industry group for deciding to plant an organic garden at the White House. The Mid America CropLife recently wrote to the First Lady to urge her to consider using pesticides – or what they call "crop protection products.” One official with the pro-pesticide group said: “While a garden is a great idea, the thought of it being organic made [us] shudder.” Mid America CropLife repr… Continue

Make Tempeh?

Got this inquiry via email (see below) Anyone interested in learning to make tempeh and/or in carrying out the tempeh business of these folks?

"Our website has been up for about 6 months: http://www.maketempeh.org [1] and we have met a few people of this group in person.

While the website has had many responses from individuals and from about 28 countries, we do not get any responses from the farm community. We do not know how to make ourselves more widely known, but we have written to vari

We put our compost in plastic thingos to appease our neighbor who thought the rats were because of our compost. The rats were, we believe driven out of their homes because of the massive NEORSD project nearby. Once we got the plastic things we have had no rats, but then the rats that came in came up through the basement toilet, so it probably missed that we had compost in the first place. Cleveland does seem to like to attach to the rat thing - no more feeding the poor on Public Square because "it attracts rats". The guy we saw feeding folks had been doing it for a quarter century with no rats in sight, but whatever. I wonder if rats visit the Huron Hospital and Stanard raised beds built with food waste. Probably not...

The health department told us that our compost had to be rat proof and two feet off the ground. They said we should buy a composter from home depot for $50. I don't think that anyone else has had a problem and I don't even think that this is a law. Someone made a complaint and that is why they came out. I don't remember the health department coming back to check on us, but we took those big barrels and drilled holes into them and we roll them around on the ground. We also made a compost bin 18 inches off the ground out of hardware cloth that is sopossed to be rat proof.
