Tell us about yourself:
My name is Mariya Topolyanskaya and I'm a rising senior at Case Western Reserve University. I have three majors: Psychology, Natural Sciences and Environmental Studies. When I get out of Case I'm looking at Law School, a BA in Environmental Studies, or both.

This summer I'm doing a Capstone project in which I will attempt to determine whether eating locally for a resident of the greater Cleveland area is practical in terms of time and money. In the fall I will do a full writeup of this project, which will include some academic research as well.
What gifts can you give to Cleveland's local food community?
My research.
What knowledge and practices do you want to learn?
How to garden better. I also want to network with Ohio farmers and people who know where to buy locally.
What about local food makes you most excited?
It can help fix our energy problems, make us healthier and bring us closer to our communities.

West Side Market and Case Market Meals

My first time cooking fish...

Meal One: Northeast Family Goat Farms goat monterey jack cheese (Whole Foods), radishes (West Side Market), Hungarian Homemade noodles (Heinan's), Kale (Co-Op), White Bass (West Side Market), Maple Syrup (Heinan's), Corbo's bread crumbs (Marc's).

Covered fish in crumbs and fried it with butter. Added radishes, kale and salt, sauteed until k… Continue

Case Farmer's Market at the BRB

Very small market as of now. But it's all local.

This is just outside of the BRB cafe in the medical school building. Fridays, 11:30a - 2:30p. Cash only.

This was the extent of it on 6/12/09:

It says where everything is from on the signs. Produce from CityFr… Continue

West Side Market

The West Side Market is a pretty good place to buy local food, if you're careful.

The West Side Market consists of an outdoor row of produce vendors and an indoor portion that contains booths selling meat, fish, dairy products, pasta, deserts, and seemingly anything you could want to get. As far as I could tell, these booths were permanent. I didn't look at all of the booths because I was specifically looking for meat, and I think I got a pretty good representative sample of that.

I looked fir… Continue

Food Co-Op Meals

What I made with the stuff from the Co-Op.

Meal one: Amir grape leaves combo, Smith's orange juice, rhubarb, kale, Aladdin spinach pie

Ah, ready made meals. So relaxing. The spinach pie was delicious. Tastes almost exactly like the ones I get at the Falafel House. There were three of them in the bag and I wound up eating the other ones separately from the next two meal… Continue

Food Co-Op

I visited the Food Co-Op to see about some lovely local food...

I had a lot of hope for the Co-op. I'd never been there but heard some good things from Case students so it sounded promising. What could be more promising for a local food shopper than a place that is apparently run by hippies?

Alas, I was very dissapointed. Most of the food at the Co-Op is organic or vegan or vegetarian, which is good (I have a new-found appreciation for people who consciously put restrictions on what they eat),… Continue
