Tell us about yourself:
It's been quite a journey for me to arrive at sustainable food systems documentation as a profession. First of all, I grew up in Tremont for five years, and then my family settled into a solar-heated home my Dad designed in Hinckley. I went to college at Case, where I realized the topic of sound was at the intersection of a number of my passions and academic interests. So, I created an interdisciplinary major called "Sound & Perception" - my capstone project was to design a masters-level psychophysical study. I deferred a decision on attending grad school to execute the study and instead built on my restaurant experience by cooking fine-dining cuisine for a couple years. I decided not to go to culinary school and become a chef, but I developed a passion for quality ingredients and an aptitude for making user interfaces more efficient. I then started doing database work for a large securities-litigation firm in San Diego. There I honed my skills in problem solving, interface design, communication and project management.... My present aim is to unite my skills in these diverse areas to positively affect food production in the U.S. This is because I've become keenly aware that the creation of sustainable food systems is critically important to the health of individuals, our environment, and our communities. This area relates to my love of both cooking and nature, and it poses numerous questions that fascinate me. So, I recently returned to Cleveland to take the next step in this journey...
What gifts can you give to Cleveland's local food community?
In early 2008 I got involved in shooting and editing PolyCultures, an ongoing film project about making healthier food systems in northern Ohio. After local legend Maurice Small and I got to know each other over the summer, he said my job description should be "The Link." I like it. I like it a lot. Basically, I seek to help curate video that portrays what's happening in our area... and to then distribute that to consumers and policy-makers, as well as people who are (or might want to be) involved on the supply side. So far it has most certainly been a worthy endeavor - slowly becoming part of this local food scene has been a great gift - to me.
What knowledge and practices do you want to learn?
Really I'm interested in learning everything I can about sustainable agriculture... but specifically I want to know more about: permaculture gardening, how we might scale local food to the mass market in Cleveland, and how to make a better Farm Bill in 2012.
What about local food makes you most excited?
That it's really, really happening in freakin' Cleveland! Seems like at least once a week I'm impressed by a new angle someone here is taking...

Premiere of PolyCultures: Food Where We Live

PolyCultures premiered Wednesday night at the Cleveland International Film Festival. It was selling well, so they added a second theater, which also sold out - we showed it simultaneously to about 550 people! The Thursday day showing was packed, and they've added an additional showing for Sunday at 9:25a.

As you can tell, we here at LESS and NAC are thrilled to be unveiling this work to an enthusiastic Cleveland audience. But we also recognize there's a lot more editing we could do to ma… Continue

I just contacted you about it. Carlton suggested it and I would love to view it as well, but the movie Fresh is 72 minutes, how long is Polycultures?

I waited to get a ticket for the showing tomorrow night because I wasn't sure if I'd be back in town yet, and it's all sold out. :( Someday I'll see it; I really want to!

Congratulations. I'm still mostly only a face-rememberer...

And ummm... he added me as a friend, and I guess I'm not too picky about the people with whom I connect in regards to local foods?
